Water System Troubleshooting Guide

This is a guide to help you check out any problems with your water well pumping system before you call your pump technician.

Try these 3 steps to make sure it is not something that you can fix yourself.

One of the last steps to check is the pressure switch. This is usually located somewhere close to the pressure tank. It’s a little box with wires coming out on each side and is also attached to the water pipe somewhere. This is what controls the pump to turn on and off at a set pressure.

WARNING: If you are not familiar with your pumping system, then stop now and call your technician.

WARNING: THE PRESSURE SWITCH DOES HAVE POWER IN IT. TURN OFF THE POWER BEFORE GOING ANY FURTHER IN THIS STEP.

If you tried all three steps and your pumping system still is not working, then call Triple L Well & Pump Services. Our experienced technicians will have you back in water as soon as possible. Don’t hesitate to call and schedule your appointment as soon as possible.

Step #1: Check your power breaker.

Locate your power breaker that turns the power on and off to your pump. The breaker will be in one of your main power boxes.

Usually outside next to your house or garage but it might be inside the garage or shop. This breaker is not typically inside the house, but it has been known to be part of the house panel. If you have trouble locating your pump breaker, give us a call. We will be happy to guide you through this step.

Most power breakers for your pump should be a double space breaker. It should look something like the image shown.

Even if it looks like it’s in the ON position, you should go ahead and turn it OFF and then back ON. It should feel like a solid click back in the ON position.

If the pump does not come ON then move onto the next step in this guide.

Most water well pumps have a control box that controls the pump. If your pump is bigger than a 1hp pump, there is a good chance it has a reset button on the box.

The reset button should be on the bottom of the control box or sometimes on the very front. It’s almost always a big red button. You might even find two next to each other. Give either one a good hard push.

The buttons are very hard to push sometimes. The button will make a clicking or popping sound if it is tripped. Now, check if your pump is running.

If you have any trouble with this step, please give us a call we are always happy to help.

Locate the breaker like you did in step 1. Turn the breaker off. Make sure it’s in the OFF position before continuing. If you’re not familiar with the pressure switch STOP now and give us a call, we will be more than happy to help.

If you’re comfortable with your knowledge of a pressure switch, then go ahead and take the cover off the switch. Inspect the switch and see if there is anything between the contact points. It will look similar to this.

With the power OFF check the points to see if anything got between the points. You may have to spread them open and use a soft bristle brush to gently clean the contacts. Even if you turned off the power, you should never touch the points with your hands. A number two pencil or a wooden clothespin works best to open the points. If the points look burnt, then it’s possible the switch is damaged and should be changed.
